Closing the Digital Divide for Displaced People
In the modern world, digital connectivity is essential for almost every aspect of daily life. For refugees and asylum seekers, access to the internet and digital devices is a critical lifeline—allowing them to stay in contact with loved ones stranded in conflict zones, communicate with legal representatives, access healthcare information, and complete online language lessons.
However, digital poverty remains a major hurdle for new arrivals in Aberdeen. Without smartphones, laptops, or mobile data, individuals are at risk of severe isolation and administrative disenfranchisement.
AARC’s Digital Inclusion Program
To tackle digital exclusion, Asylum & Refugee Care (AARC) SCIO provides practical digital support services, including:
- Free Mobile Data & SIM Cards: Distributing pre-loaded SIM cards containing call minutes and mobile data, enabled by national digital inclusion initiatives and donor support.
- Refurbished Device Distribution: Collecting, wiping, and restoring donated smartphones, tablets, and laptops for distribution to refugee students and families.
- Digital Literacy Workshops: Assisting service users with setting up email accounts, navigating online UK government services, using NHS video consultations, and installing educational apps.
- Free Wi-Fi Access at Hub Drop-Ins: Providing high-speed internet access at our Aberdeen hub during all weekly sessions.
How Digital Connection Changes Lives
Being digitally connected empowers refugees to take charge of their own resettlement process. It enables parents to assist their children with online school homework, allows applicants to check legal updates from their solicitors, and gives individuals a voice to share their stories.
